"Resounding Aftershocks" |
"There's an "animated" quality to his playing that breathes life into the music and well projects each individual piece's character, be it power and vitality or tender dolefulness. Highly recommended to any pipe organ fans, especially for its unusual and varied assortment of pieces. " "A recording worthily celebrating the rebirth of this impressive organ" ~ |
Martin Setchell's latest CD launched in March, 2019
Nine years after the last recording on the Rieger organ in the Christchurch comes a celebration CD by city organist Martin Setchell, called "Resounding Aftershocks". The reason for the silence is all too well known: Three massive earthquakes in 2010-2011, which caused widespread damage and killed 185 people, also damaged the town hall, ensuring its closure for eight years. The organ suffered minor damage but after full restoration and enlargement (an additional 12 ranks being installed at the time of the quakes) it was officially opened on March 6th 2019. The CD was recorded on January 26-27th and is now available with PayPal here
If you thought organ CDs had to be boring, you've come to the wrong place. Part of Martin Setchell's mission in life as an international concert organist is to prove that organ music can be, and IS, fun. Although he is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, Martin's travels give him ample opportunity to woo listeners with his brand of music, through live concerts, and his recordings. Three of the earlier and extremely popular CDs are out of print: Bonbons for Organ 1 and 2, and Let the Pealing Organ Blow. Until then, you have two CD titles to choose from: “A Taste of Shropshire”, and “Cardboard Cathedral Organ Capers”

“Martin makes full use of the built-in velocity sensitivity with subtle dynamic inflections which are stunning in such works as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Fauré's Sicilienne” |
A Taste of ShropshireSORRY - out of stock
Thoroughly English organ music on the famous Snetzler organ of St Laurence in the market town of Ludlow in Shropshire. Delights from Burney, Elgar, Walton, and Arthur Sullivan to the hilarious modern parody by Francis, and tone-painting of Paul Spicer.
“The celebrated New Zealand organist Martin Setchell plays superbly throughout; he is an impeccable stylist, with nimble fingers (and feet) and is clearly having a jolly good time as well.” |
