Paradisus Musicus - Scholarly Editions
by Melchior Franck, edited by Martin Setchell

This volume (no 6 in the series Recent Researches in the Music of the Baroque Era) is a scholarly edition of the the last collection of sacred music by Melchior Franck (c.1579-1639). It contains 66 motets for between 1 and 8 voices with basso continuo, the majority of which are duets. The texts are from the book of Isaiah; Franck selected what he considered the most comforting verses from each of the 66 chapters.
Central to the collection are the concertos, which include 40 duets for two treble or two tenor voices, nine trios, 15 quartets, and two pieces for solo voice. The last eight concertos combine and contrast a pair of distant violen with the voices. As Kurt Gudewill suggests, although Franck came to the small sacred concerto later than contemporaries like Schein and Schütz, these concertos show Franck to be one of the most advanced composers of his time.
