(And anything else that tickles my fancy. . . )

Coming to the middle of 2025!
We're cooking up a concert on the calendar! □ Puns aside, here's another little giveaway!□
Gather round for some goodies, chums! Whether you are curious about the culinary skills of the organ fraternity, are keen to plan ahead for 2026, or you want to enjoy an annual musical treat in the Christchurch Town Hall, this is where you can learn how. Read on. . .
FREE CONCERT
It's back! Martin Setchell's annual FREE organ curator’s concert again takes place in the  Christchurch Town Hall auditorium on King's Birthday, Monday, 2 June 2025 at 2.30pm. By popular demand, Thomas Eves returns as Martin Setchell's guest artist for another 'Sound the Trumpet' concert which was so well received in 2023. Thomas is principal trumpet with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Also starring is young Christchurch organist, Sea-am Thompson, organ and choral scholar at Christchurch Cathedral. Join them for an entertaining afternoon of lively music. Although it is free to enter, you must register with Eventbrite beforehand. To read more about the music and artists, and how to register, visit the organ's website event page . Then save the date on your calendar!

Two winners for 2026 needed!
Butz Music publishers in Bonn are already selling their 2026 vertical calendars. (And no, I don't know where the year went to either). The organs pictured are a variety of beauties from Germany, some of which I am sure you will recognise. If you would like one of these stylish calendars, visit the competition page through the link below for entry details (free, of course!). We have 2 of these lovelies to hand out.The competition ends on June 10th so you don't have much time. GO NOW

Organists cooking up a storm

I hope you're enjoying our Organists in the Kitchen series. Now 29 brave organists have flaunted their cooking skills (or otherwise) on the pages designed to show what busy people - and not necessarily those who love to cook - recommend as their go-to recipes between practice, services, concerts, travelling and even, with luck, relaxing. Each week a new recipe appears online here, with a little about the contributor. Check out the random dishes and let me know what you think. The latest few organist cooking up a blast were Birger Petersen, Thierry Mechler, Marie-Louise Langlais, Roberto Bertero, Nina de Sole, Martin Setchell, Carson Cooman, Ronald Watson, Grimoaldo Macchia, Katelyn Emerson, Katherine Dienes-Williams, Hannah Parry, Alexander Kellarev, Andreas Willscher, and Agnes Armstrong. Here's looking at the cooking!

An historic organ jigsaw to fiddle with

Link to jigsaw of St Wenzel organ
This gem tucked up high in the upper reaches of St Wenzel in Naumburg, Germany, has been restored to the glorious state it was when JS Bach himself tested it in 1743. Only 165 pieces, it should be a doddle - easier than playing at least :-)  Have a go on Jigidi now
I'm rather proud that we never use - and hope to never have to use - external advertising on our websites, Pipeline press and NZOrgan. On most other sites, readers are forced to hurdle over annoying ads that appear in a ratio of 100 ads to one news item or genuine text. We don't do that, and hopefully you find reading the pages makes for a calmer, clearer read. So when you visit our websites, if you DO want to buy something in the realm of the organ as a gift or a treat for yourself, you'll find plenty on those pages. Think of it as a treasure hunt!

From the Swellbox

  • The Most Unusual Churches in the World - and they really are.
  • Organists: listen up and protect your ears! How hearing protection became cool - thankfully
  • Did you know that Venice is an upside-down forest? And the men who drove the support piles (the battipali ) had their own songs as they worked, 1604 years ago? That's a feather in the cap for ancient building techniques.
  • Are you in the UK? How about finding your nearest next organ concert? Fossick away!
  • The Nelson Organ Festival (AKA the NZ organ Association)  is having its get-together from May 31st to June 1st. Details here
  • Every Noise at once. In the site's creator's words: "Every Noise at Once was a long-running attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 6,291 genre-shaped distinctions at Spotify through 2023-11-19". I THINK that means examples of every known noise (AKA music) genre known to have existed. Worth a look even if to reassure yourself that delightfully zany geniuses are still around.
  • Scared of being scammed? Listen how to deal with "Windows" scammers, according to AI "Granny" Daisy. What a gal!
Image of cat sleeping in a box
Hopefully we will see many of you at the concert on Monday June 2!! Martin gets so excited about this annual concert he finds it hard to sleep. Truly!
On the other hand, Dudley thinks sleep is what he was built for. Except at night. Then it's time for search-the-balls-of-wool, leap on any sleep creature, mountaineering practice and so it goes.  Sweet dreams, little brat. . .
